Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 1 box box of chocolate cake mix or 1 homemade chocolate cake
For the Whipped Cream
  • 1 cup heavy cream for whipping
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Trifle
  • 2 cups canned or fresh cherries pitted, with juice or syrup
  • 1/4 cup cherry juice from the canned cherries or fresh
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding store-bought or homemade
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate shavings or grated chocolate
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder optional for garnish

Method

Prepare the Cake
  1. If using a box cake mix, follow the instructions on the package to bake the chocolate cake.
  2. If you prefer to make it from scratch, prepare your favorite chocolate cake recipe.
  3. Allow the cake to cool completely before cutting it into small cubes.
Whip the Cream
  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract.
  2. Use an electric mixer to whip the cream until soft peaks form. Be careful not to over-whip it.
Prepare the Cherries
  1. If using canned cherries, drain them and keep the juice. You can also use fresh cherries if you prefer.
  2. Slice the cherries in half or leave them whole, depending on your preference.
Assemble the Trifle
  1. In your trifle or glass bowl, add a layer of chocolate cake cubes at the bottom.
  2. Add a layer of whipped cream over the cake.
  3. Add a layer of cherries, followed by a layer of vanilla pudding.
  4. Repeat these layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of whipped cream on top.
  5. Sprinkle dark chocolate shavings over the top. Dust with cocoa powder for extra decoration if desired.
Let it Chill
  1. Cover the trifle with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator.
  2. Chill for at least 2 hours before serving so that the flavors meld together.

Notes

This dessert is best served cold. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It is not recommended to freeze the trifle as the whipped cream may not hold its texture after thawing.
