  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 batch cream cheese frosting for topping

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
  4. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
Baking
  1. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  2. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
Assembly
  1. Once cool, layer the cakes with cream cheese frosting in between and on top.
  2. Serve and enjoy your red velvet treat while watching the Oscars!

Notes

Store leftover Red Velvet Treat in an airtight container. Keep it in the refrigerator if you have added cream cheese frosting; it will stay fresh for about 3-5 days. If unfrosted, it can be kept at room temperature. For freezing, wrap layers in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil.
