Sweet & Smokey BBQ Sauce

Ingredients
  

For the Sauce
  • 1/4 cup canola oil For cooking
  • 3/4 cup blended or finely diced sweet or yellow onion Pulsed through the ninja chopper for smooth consistency
  • 2 Tbsp finely minced garlic Fresh garlic for best flavor
  • 1-1/2 cups ketchup Use low-sodium for a healthier version
  • 1/2 cup honey Can reduce for a lighter option
  • 1 Tbsp tomato paste concentrate In tube for easy use
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar Plus 2 Tbsp for sweetness
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce Use gluten-free version if needed
  • 1 Tbsp prepared Dijon mustard Or 2 tsp ground mustard for more kick
  • 1 tsp cayenne Adjust based on spice preference
  • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke For smoky flavor
  • 2 Tbsp Applewood grill seasoning Or substitute with favorite BBQ rub

Method
 

Cooking
  1. In medium saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the onion and sauté until translucent, about 3 minutes.
  3. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Add the ketchup, honey, tomato paste, vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire, mustard, cayenne, black pepper, and liquid smoke, stirring well.
  5. Add the Applewood seasoning, stir well, and simmer for 4-5 minutes.
  6. If the sauce is too thick, whisk in up to ½ cup water until desired consistency is reached, bringing it back to a simmer.
  7. Cool and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Notes

Store in an airtight jar for up to 2 weeks. Freeze for longer storage in single-use portions. Adjust sugar for a healthier version. Pair with lean protein and whole grains for a balanced meal.
